What is a shade sail?
Shade sails are an attractive, affordable way to block harmful UV rays from the sun. They can offer up to 90% UV ray protection and provide an efficient way to add shade to your outdoor space.
They could be used to make an outdoor area like a patio or deck cooler and more comfortable. Shade sails are made of strong, water-resistant fabric and come in different shapes and sizes to fit your space. You can attach them to walls, trees, and other structures to get shade wherever you want.
It can be challenging to decide on the most suitable shade sail for your outdoor area due to the many available options in terms of shape, color, and size. We have created a guide to assist you in making this decision.
Evaluate the space that you would like shaded
- How much sunlight do you want to block?
- Where is the sun in your outdoor space?
- What area of your property do you want your sail shade?
- How big is the area you are looking to install the shade?
You need to know the size of your outdoor space where you want the shade sail installed. If you have several different areas with varying levels of sun exposure measure them separately so you can choose the right size for each section. An advantage is that sail shades can be easily moved, unlike more permanent shade solutions and structures.
Determine the structure you want to attach it to
You can attach your shade sail directly to your house or on existing structures such as a deck, patio, or pergola. If the structure you want to attach to isn’t available, consider buying steel frames or concrete anchor posts to hold your shade. This will help ensure that your shade sail stays in place and doesn’t blow away in strong winds.
It is crucial to install at least one corner of the shade sail lower than the others so that rainwater can run off. If the shade sail is not angled correctly, rainwater will collect on the fabric and cause it to stretch or tear. To avoid this, we recommend installing the shade sail at a 30-degree incline and ensuring that the shade is tightened well during installation.
Blocks up to 95% of harmful UV rays and direct sunlight exposure. Protects you from the sun without trapping hot air beneath. Allows cooling breezes and light to pass through for a better airy and comfortable space.
Identify a suitable anchor point
Finding suitable anchor points for the corners of the shade sail is essential. Consider options that can withstand tension and high wind loads of the shade sail material.
Some suitable fixing points could be:
- Concrete or brick walls
- Steel posts or intense beams
- Trees (if healthy and strong enough)
- Existing structures (such as pergolas or playground equipment)
- Custom-build anchor points (posts should be 48mm wide galvanized steel and 4mm thick)
Choose your material
There are two types of material available for shade sails. We have provided a comparison to help your choose the best option for your needs.
Waterproof Shade Sails:
- Made of high-density polyester or PVC-coated
- Rotproof and easy-to-clean material
- Waterproof keeps the area underneath dry during rain
- Blocks over 98% of harmful UV rays
- 2-year manufacturer’s warranty
- Each side equipped with straps for tension
- Grade 304 stainless steel D rings at each corner for added strength
Breathable Shade Sails:
- Made from commercial-grade, heavy-duty HDPE polymer wave fabric

Choose a shape
Shade Sails are available in different shapes to fit your specific shading needs. Triangle and right-angle shade sails offer less shade and are suitable for covering smaller spaces such as corner sofas. Rectangular and square Shade Sails cover larger areas and can fully cover a patio or a deck.
Shade Sail Shape Types
Choose a size
Consider the size and shape of the area you want to cover, the height of the mounting points, the location and sun/wind patterns, and your personal preference for aesthetics and coverage. Make sure the shade sail overlaps the edges of the area to provide adequate protection and choose a shape that fits the shape of the area.
Choose a color
Shade Sails are a visually appealing option for providing shade in your outdoor space. They are available in various colors, including Azure blue, Charcoal grey, and Ivory. Whether you want to add a pop of color or blend in with your existing color scheme, there is a shade sail to suit your needs.
We hope this guide can help you determine the best shade type for your space.
